Saturday, November 26, 2005  Thanks to Comcast, My Internets have been down for the past week, so I haven't been able to post anything new. Not that I post anything new anyways, but still...Thanksgiving is awesome. And to think that it, and maybe even America, wouldn't have happened if it weren't for Squanto. Why Hollywood hasn't made a movie from his life is beyond me. In the early 1600s Squanto befriends an English sea captain and acts as his guide while learning English. Then, slavers invade and capture Squanto and take him to Spain as a slave. A Spanish priest befriends him and passes word back to the sea captain, who liberates Squanto and sends him back to his homeland. Unfortunately, Squanto's people have caught smallpox from the slavers and have mostly died out. Pilgrims show up. Their bean crops die out, and they are at war with a neighboring tribe. Squanto introduces himself. Being able to speak English is a huge asset. Squanto teaches the Pilgrims to plant corn, and negotiates a peace with the natives. There is a multi-day feast to celebrate these events, which is later memorialized as Thanksgiving. Amazing. posted by Nate on 8:57 PM link
