Saturday, September 11, 2004Mark Steyn writes an hilarious piece on Dan Rather and the media in general. ''This was too hot not to push,'' one producer told the American Spectator. Hundreds of living Swiftvets who've signed affidavits and are prepared to testify on camera -- that's way too cold to push; we'd want to fact-check that one thoroughly, till, say, midway through John Kerry's second term. But a handful of memos by one dead guy slipped to us by a Kerry campaign operative -- that meets ''basic standards'' and we gotta get it out there right away. posted by Nate on 1:11 PM link Thursday, September 09, 2004Standing in line at the grocery store, I noticed the newspaper headline: 1000 Dead in Iraq War, with the lede that most of these casualties have been since President Bush declared the major fighting over. People walking by the magazine kiosk clucked disapprovingly as they passed by, opining that we needlessly fought an insane war and need John Kerry more than ever, etc. etc. How's this for perspective: during the Normandy campaign, now thought of as one of the most important triumphs in the history of this country and the world, the allies lost 2,500 men per day. Yes, you read that right. One thousand deaths are a terrible tragedy for the families of those involved. In historical terms, though, this is a miniscule sacrifice, considering that America is again saving the world from crazy armed men with unusual facial hair. The difference is that the new opponent is motivated by spiritual, not worldly conquest. Had Hitler won, we would have lived in a depressing Orwellian state for a generation and then probably overthrown the government; if the jihadists win, maybe a few isolated pockets of infidels survive the anthrax and the nuking and the glavin!, and everyone else lives in subjugation according to a nihilist form of Islamic Fascism. The bulk of the world is contaminated and uninhabitable for centuries, and there is little outlet for the freedom-loving impulse of the human spirit. Sounds like fun. Only not. I salute those who served and continue to serve in this campaign against terrorism.
