Saturday, April 24, 2004  The NFL Draft is a mere twelve hours away, and word has it that the Lions are trading down. The rumor once was that New England would give them their two first rounders and a second to move up for Miami Safety / Beastman Sean Taylor, but that talk has died down in recent weeks. Don't get me wrong, Taylor would be a tremendous acquisition, but with two competant safeties in Terrence Holt and the newly signed Brock Marion, it looks like Detroit will move down and target RB Steven Jackson. What I hope happens: Manning and Rothlisberger go in the top four. Pittsburgh and Buffalo get in a bidding war over who gets QB Philip Rivers. Pittsburgh offers pick #11 a fourth rounder, and Disgruntled, Contract-Hungry Plaxico Burress for pick #6 and a third. This gives Detroit a gigantor possession wideout opposite Charles "The Zombie Pirate LeChuck" Rogers, and there is much rejoicing. Yay! The Lions take Jackson, then go guard (Vernon Carey) or linebacker (Dontarrious Thomas) in the second round. Or, the Lions could give the Bills #6 and the third rounder for pick #13 (Jonathan Vilma) a fifth, and Travis Henry, who is expendable after last year's pick of Willis McGahee, whom Detroit would have taken #2 overall last year if it weren't for his knee injury. What will probably happen: the Washington Freaking Redskins select Taylor, nobody wants to trade with the Lions, and Detroit gets TE Kellen Winslow Jr. from Miami. Never mind that tight ends in Mariucci's offense run crossing patterns rather than go-routes, and seventh round talent can do a competant job. Also, Winslow is a mediocre blocker and can be, in the words of the Walrus vs. Polar Bear Discovery Channel Animal Face-Off Announcer Guy, "Sizeable and Surly." Hooray Lions! At least we can console ourselves by noting that the Tigers are over .500, lead the American League in scoring, and hung an 11 run inning on Cleveland tonight. I mean, when Brandon "Light Hitting Defensive Catcher" Inge can get four RBI, you know things are going your way. Not that it'll last, but still... UPDATE: Very good. Very good indeed. Suppose someone were to come up to you and say, "I'll give you free stuff in exchange for not having to deal with an egotistical jerk." That's exactly what Cleveland did. We don't get Kellen Winslow's attitude, and with an extra second round pick we were able to trade up to get the Running Back we desparately needed. At pick #6, Kevin Jones is an enormous reach; at #30, Kevin Jones is a steal. WR Roy Williams is a beast: the only question is his lackadaisical attitude, which I'm sure fiery coach Steve Mariucci can fix. Or maybe GM Matt Millen can occasionally insult his masculinity and call him a homoqueerfaggot or something. Keith Smith is solid. He's a physical press corner who can match up with Randy Moss. After seeing the Bears' Charles Tillman steal a game-winning interception in the endzone against Moss last year, and seeing Minnestoa have a great draft with the phenomenal Kenechi Udeze, I think Detroit feels that Smith can help them squeeze by Minnesota for a division title. The late round guys were also very good. Without a fourth and next year's fifth, we had to hit on these picks, and we did. Alex Lewis is an up-and-comer, and can backup two linebacker spots. Purdue tackle Kelly Butler was supposed to be a fourth rounder, and we got him at the top of the sixth. He gives us depth and flexibility in case we want to move RT Stockar McDougal to guard or choose to not re-sign him next year. In short, Matt Millen has added another very good draft. Now that he has a great coach on the field, the Lions have a real chance at contending in 2005, or maybe even this year. posted by Nate on 12:13 AM link
