Friday, August 29, 2003  I still have no idea when the new computer parts will be here. Unfortunately, I ordered through the computer shop I work for, and they're dependent on their supplier, who is dependent on its supplier, etc. I don't mind waiting a bit, but Jeez O' Peete.(Incidently, I think I saw Jeez O' Peete play lead guitar last year for a Black Sabbath tribute band. I digress.) I've been surfing the 'Net for deals on ethernet cards I can toss into the old, decrepit family MacIntosh so I can hook it into the cable modem. It is a very slow machine, pre-Steve Jobs comeback-- 256 color video, excruciatingly slow 200mhz "Power" PC processor, and the ghastly Mac OS 7.5. Multitasking causes the machine to slow to a crawl roughly the same scale as geological time, and every hour or so you get the Catastrophic Failure Bomb icon with a cryptic error message: "Error Number 11234124132456387620. Your Mac Will Now Reboot. (And you will lose everything you've been working on for the last thirty two minutes. Because you forgot to save your files to disk. Dumbass.)" Perhaps Cats has hacked into the computer, for to repeatedly set up me the bomb. At least the machine has two PCI slots. I'm thinking that if I get the ethernet cards and install Yellowdog Linux on it, it will run like a dream. It will be fine, or at least acceptable. It won't be that bad. Really it won't. Somebody shoot me. posted by Nate on 1:05 AM link Tuesday, August 26, 2003  Tonight was the premiere of ESPN's new show, Playmakers, a gritty dramatization of off-the-field life in the NFL. I think Bill Simmons nailed it in his review:I'm not sure you can "push the envelope" on basic cable these days, not when HBO and Showtime are crossing every line imaginable. Shows like "Playmakers" inevitably end up in creative limbo -- just different enough from network TV that it's appealing, but restricted from heeding the great Bruce Dickinson's advice and really exploring the proverbial studio space. I wonder if it will turn out like the short-lived Jay Mohr vehicle Action, the outrageous comedy about a sleazy Hollywood producer who falls in love with a child-star turned hooker (Illeana Douglas). That was a great show, but it was heavily edited for time and content. It died on the vine at Fox, but had it been an hour-long HBO program, it would rank up there with Curb Your Enthusiasm for comic genius. P.S.-- This post needs more cowbell!!! posted by Nate on 10:20 PM link Sunday, August 24, 2003  This afternoon I caught the mystery thriller Above Suspicion on cable. The film is about a detective (Christopher Reeve) whose brother, also a cop, is having an affair with his wife (Kim Cattrall). As a result of the affair, the brother arrives late to a crime scene and messes up securing the area, and Christopher Reeves is shot and paralyzed. Depressed at facing life without the use of his legs, Reeves takes out a million dollar insurance policy and gets his wife and brother to stage a robbery-gone-bad to end his life.A few (somewhat predictible) twists and turns, but good overall. William Macy co-wrote the script and Joe Mantegna also appears. What is utterly bizarre about the film was that it was released in 1995, six days before Reeve's real-life horseback riding accident that paralyzed him. posted by Nate on 8:19 PM link
